Peter Wickham R.E. (1934 - 2009)

Peter was an active member of TAS, where he demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the promotion of the arts in the South West through his own work and the Society's annual exhibitions. His work had been exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Ashmolean in Oxford. Peter's knowledge of TAS history was a source of dependable reference.

As an artist, his philosophy underpinned his views on art and architecture. The influence of Charles Knight, a distinguished water colourist, during Peter's days as a student at Brighton School of Art, nurtured his interest in architecture and geometrical patterns. This was evident in his production of the Badia Fiesolana Series. The Abbey at Fiesole near Florence, with it's elegant geometrical façade, provided the inspiration for his extensive work on the Abbey Series. This ranged from the representational to the abstract and resulted in the production of well constructed and sensitively produced designs.

Peter's work is neither a form of manifesto, nor is it an apology. In his considered commitment to creative expression and individual conviction, one may glimpse a path of intellectual journey which describes Peter, the man and the artist.

TAS have a number of Peter's works, which are for sale. Please email: info@tivertonartsociety.co.uk for more information.
